One of the earliest obtainable printed maps of Puerto Rico (with parts of Hispaniola and the Virgin Island), Porcacchi's S. Giovanni, was published in many editions, beginning with his 1576 island guide, The World's Most Famous Islands. This is a beautifully preserved, early 18th century Paduan edition, from Lasor a Varea's Universus Terrarum Orbis. A delightful cartouche, a compass rose and fanciful marine creatures add to this increasingly scarce map's enduring appeal.
