The beautifully detailed and colored map of the Holy Land from the 1870 edition of Mitchell's popular New General Atlas of the world. Framed by the decorative vine motif border typical of Mitchell maps of the mid-1860s to 1881, the map includes both regional and tribal divisions of the Holy Land, Syria, and Perea (Jordan); a key to ancient sites and modern towns; a mini-glossary of terms; a list of the ten cities that made up the Decapolis (a group of Roman centers on the eastern frontier of the Empire); and an inset plan of "Modern Jerusalem."
