Plate XLII from the 1603 German edition of Part II of the Grands Voyages (Brevis Narratio Eorum quae in Florida Americae provincia Gallis acciderunt) based on Le Moyne's drawings of the French expeditions to Florida and the customs of Florida natives. This plate depicts the ax murder of Pierre Gambié, who had acquired a considerable personal fortune by trading with the Indians. He even married one of the Indian chief’s daughters but gained a reputation for avarice. While returning to Fort Caroline in a canoe, with much of his wealth and two Indian guides, he was hit on the head and killed out of revenge. The Indians fled with the goods and nothing was known of the crime for a long while thereafter.
