Plate XIIII from the 1603 German edition of Part II of the Grands Voyages (Brevis Narratio Eorum quae in Florida Americae provincia Gallis acciderunt) based on Le Moyne's drawings of the French expeditions to Florida and the customs of Florida natives. This plate depicts the Indian chief Outina marching to war. As described in the text, "He walked in solitary grandeur amongst his warriors, covered in red war paint. Around the outer flanks were young men, who acted as scouts and seemed to use scent to track their enemy, like dogs tracking down wild beasts. Instead of using trumpets and drums to give orders, as we do, they used all sorts of cries and whoops and shouts to communicate with one another."
