Plate XII from the 1603 German edition of Part II of the Grands Voyages (Brevis Narratio Eorum quae in Florida Americae provincia Gallis acciderunt) based on Le Moyne's drawings of the French expeditions to Florida and the customs of Florida natives. This is the famous image in which Outina consults a sorcerer before engaging in battle. Claiming to be 120 years old, the sorcerer laid a shield on the ground, around which he inscribed signs in the earth. Then, kneeling on the shield, he began chanting and gesticulating wildly until his limbs became so disjointed he hardly seemed human any more. At last his chanting ceased and his posture returned to normal. Then he told Outina all he had seen of the number and strength of the enemy.
