This beautifully rendered and preserved engraving from Book VIII of the Grands Voyages, de Bry's landmark collection of early discovery narratives, depicts the rock- and tree-top dwellings built by the Indians of the Orinoco delta to avoid the river's floodwaters. In the foreground, Indians disinter the skeletons of deceased chiefs to adorn and display them.
