In this scene from Book V of the Grands Voyages, de Bry's landmark collection of early discovery narratives, a French privateer, drawn by the pearl banks of Cubagua (Venezuela), is repulsed by natives in canoes. The Spanish had persuaded the Indians to attack by warning them of the sodomite tendencies of the French.
