In this magnificent and beautifully preserved engraving from Volume X of the Grands Voyages, de Bry's landmark collection of early discovery narratives, Vespucci reaches Lake Maracaibo and his forces engage the natives in battle. Native huts built on poles in the water reminded the Spanish of Venice (hence the name Venezuela).
