In this fascinating and beautifully preserved engraving from Volume X of the Grands Voyages, de Bry's landmark collection of early discovery narratives, the natives of the region of Paria (Venezuela) are shown tending their sick: those with fever are bathed in a cold stream and then chased around a fire to dry out. Vomiting was treated by fasting then careful attention to diet, which included human flesh.
