This fascinating and beautifully preserved engraving from the Grands Voyages, de Bry's landmark collection of early discovery narratives, depicts Columbus' vessels moored in the pearl banks off the island of Cubagua in the Gulf of Paria (Venezuela) and natives diving for pearl oysters. Columbus' encounter with the pearl divers took place during his third voyage to the New World in 1498.
