Province de Yun-nan

This item has been sold. Please check our homepage for currently available maps.
D'Anville's highly detailed and splendidly colored map of China's Yun-nan province from du Halde's Description geographique historique...de l'Empire de la Chine et de la Tartarie Chinoise. Based on Jesuit sources, d'Anville's maps remained the definitive European rendering of China's provinces until the end of the 19th century. Surrounding the province are the kingdoms of Tong-king, Laos, Pegou, and Ava, "little known savage peoples" and "the lands of the lamas." The title cartouche features a lovely lakeside scene with waterfalls and a stone arch. The coloring throughout is superb with gold highlights in the title cartouche and on the compass rose. A delightful example of the mapmaker's and map colorist's art.
