Tunes Urbs

A dramatic, bird's eye view of the successful Turkish siege of Spanish-occupied Tunis from the first atlas of city plans and views, Braun & Hogenberg's Civitas Orbis Terrarum. The city itself appears in the background, behind its lake, waterways and fortifications. The Guleta fortress is fired on by Turkish land forces and the Turkish fleet in the harbor. To the right, lie the ruins of ancient Carthage. A fascinating and well-preserved sheet from a landmark publication.
