Blaeu's important and highly decorative map of the Spice Islands. In addition to a sumptuous title cartouche, the map features an inset of the Island of Bachian (Batjan) in an elaborate military-motif frame as well as a Moluccan couple in the lower right corner. Indicative of the area's commercial importance, Blaeu has filled the seas with both European and local ships, two of which are engaged in battle. Sea monsters and decorative compass roses add to the map's appeal.
