Merian's beautifully detailed and engraved panoramic view of then Turkish-controlled Greek town of Napoli di Romania, today's Nauplia, in the Peloponnese on the north end of the Argolic Gulf. According to Greek myth, the town was founded by Nauplius, son of Poseidon, god of the sea. It became the first capital of the independent Kingdom of Greece in 1832. The view shows ships approaching the town and a number key identifies major sites and defensive structures in the town and its environs.
