d'Anville's magnificent east Asia map from du Halde's Description geographique historique...de l'Empire de la Chine et de la Tartarie Chinoise is based on maps commissioned by the Kangxi Emperor from Jesuit missionaries in China. Extending from the Caspian Sea to the Pacific, the hugely influential map provides detailed renderings of China, Tibet, and "Chinese Tartary," and the first accurate depiction of the Korean Peninsula. The stunning title cartouche shows the Kangxi Emperor presiding over the survey of his lands, with two Jesuit surveyors entering a farm village. Two wolf hunters take aim at their prey atop the mileage scale cartouche.
