The overall North America sheet from the Atlas Geographique, Statistique, Historique, et Cronologique des Deux Ameriques, the French version of Carey & Lea's American Atlas, published in Paris by J. Carez. The highly detailed and accurate map of the continent in the early 1820s shows the United States extending to the Pacific and far north into what is now British Columbia, Mexico in control of what is now the southwestern US, and Alaska labeled "Amerique Russe." Many Indian localities are noted throughout, and a fictitious branch of the Rockies is shown extending across what is now Utah nearly to the Pacific coast. The map is surrounded on three sides by text describing North America's geography, political divisions, and Indian territories, plus a "sketch" of the continent's history.
