A large, magnificently detailed and beautifully preserved coastal chart of the Gulf of Mexico and northwestern Caribbean, encompassing Florida, the Gulf coasts of what are now the United States and Mexico and most of Cuba. Published by the French hydrographic office in 1800–1801 (the year IX in the French revolutionary calendar), the map includes a huge number of depth soundings and coastal details, based on the explorations of José Antonio de Evía in the 1780s and other Spanish "plans and observations." The detailed renderings of the New Orleans and Galveston Bay areas are especially noteworthy.
