Published by Dezauche, engraved by Marie Duval and intended for "the instruction of youth," Buache's fascinating map of the Middle East "in its early period" extends from Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) and Egypt to Elam (Persia/Iran) and encompasses "Canaan or Judea," Syria, Assyria, Mesopotamia, Armenia, Babylon, and Arabia. Among the designated sites and events are Jonas being devoured by the whale, St. Paul's route to Rome, the lands of Job and of Ismael, the Tower of Babylon, Mt. Ararat, and the site of the Garden of Eden, north of the Tigris River.
