Plan de la Baye de l'Isle de St. Vincent [and on the same sheet] Carte Exacte de la Cote du Cap Verd

Two Cape Verde maps on a single sheet from the atlas of Prevost d'Exiles' influential travel book, Histoire Generale des Voyages. On the left is Bellin's lovely plan of St. Vincent Bay, with parts of St. Vincent (Sao Vicente) and St. Antoine (Santo Antao) islands in the northern Cape Verde archipelago; below it is a coastal profile of St. Vincent Island. On the right is a chart of the Cape Verde Peninsula on the northwest coast of Africa, site of Dakar, Senegal's capital. The map includes a decorative cartouche, a vignette of a ship firing its guns in the Atlantic, and a note explaining that Cape Verde is not the westernmost point of the continent as had been thought. Below is a view of Cape Emanuel and Goree Island, known for its role as an slave trade entrepot.
