Carte de la Baye de Hudson

This item has been sold. Please check our homepage for currently available maps.
Bellin's beautifully engraved and designed map of Hudson Bay, James Bay, and Hudson Strait, from the atlas of Prevost d'Exiles' Histoire Generale des Voyages. The map encompasses parts of what are now the Canadian territory of Nunavut and the provinces of Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Labrador. What is now northern Quebec is included in Labrador, and Baffin Island is called Isle de Bonne Fortune. Although the coastal details are good, much of the interior is described as "unknown" or belonging to Indian nations. On the upper left corner, one of several legends and observations states that "the English are looking for a passage in this region, but none exists."
