Iudaea seu Terra Sancta quae Hebraeorum sive Israelitarum in suas duodecimi Tribus divisa

Based on Nicolas Sanson's influential Holy Land map, this is the original Paris edition of Jaillot's monumental map of "Judea or the Holy Land," divided into the 12 tribal territories and featuring a wealth of place names and topographical details. (The same map would later be reissued in Amsterdam by Pierre Mortier.) Two splendid cartouches decorate the map. The larger title cartouche is surmounted by the French royal coat-of-arms and flanked by the figures of Moses and Aaron; an inset on the bottom of the cartouche depicts Moses and the brazen serpent. The smaller, but no less elaborate mileage-scale cartouche features Adam and Even in the Garden of Eden as well as a key to "royal cities," "priestly cities," and "sanctuaries."
