Bellin's highly detailed chart of the bay and island of Arguin and the adjacent coast of present-day Mauritania, from the atlas volume of Prévost d'Exiles' collection of travel narratives, Histoire Generale des Voyages. The chart features depth soundings, shoals, anchorages, coastal topographical features, and an elegant title cartouche. Now part of Banc d'Arguin National Park, Arguin Island was the site of the wreck of the French frigate Medusa in 1816, immortalized in Gericault's iconic painting in the Louvre Museum.
