The beautifully detailed and colored map of the then District of Alaska just three years after its purchase from Russia by the U.S. in 1867, from the 1870 edition of Mitchell's popular New General Atlas of the world. Framed by the decorative vine motif border typical of Mitchell maps of the mid-1860s to 1881, the map delineates the maritime boundary in the Behring Sea and Arctic Ocean between Russia and the U.S., as well as the boundary between Alaska and British North America (Canada).
