The first issue of the second German edition of Part Four of de Bry's landmark compilation of travel and discovery narratives, Grands Voyages. Part Four is a translation of the Milanese explorer Girolamo Benzoni's account of the Spanish conquest of the West Indies, first published in Italian in 1565. The volume contains two engraved title pages (one in German, the other in Latin); an engraved text illustration with coats of arms and virtues; an engraved text illustration depicting Columbus led forth by sea gods; a version of Stradanus's "Americae Retectio" plate, showing the Western Hemisphere on a globe revealed by Janus and Flora, with medallion portraits of Columbus and Vespucci; and 24 text engravings illustrating Benzoni's History of the New World. Does not include the accompanying West Indies map.
