Essai politique sur l'Ile de Cuba (two volumes)

This item has been sold. Please check our homepage for currently available maps.
The first edition of Alexander von Humboldt's landmark work, "The Island of Cuba: A Political Essay." The two-volume essay was highly controversial in its day for its condemnation of slavery, and was actually banned in Spain. Lapie's accompanying and superbly detailed map of Cuba, "drawn from the astronomical observations of Spanish navigators and on those of Mr. Humboldt," features beautiful topographical and coastal detail, an inset plan of Havana, a note on the map's sources and an elegantly simple title cartouche.
