Recueil de vues des lieux principaux de la colonie francaise de Saint-Domingue

This item has been sold. Please check our homepage for currently available maps.
The scarce first edition of the atlas published as a companion to the six-volume Loix et constitutions des colonies françoises de l'Amérique sous le Vent by M. Moreau de Saint-Méry, a key chronicler of life on the French colony of Saint Domingue, today's Haiti, on the eve of the Haitian Revolution. The volume contains 30 engraved maps, plans and plates (8 double-page), including the rare general map of Hispaniola by Sonis and plans of Cap Francois, Port au Prince, Les Cayes and the colony's other major towns. (Plate 17 in the index, the map of the French side of Hispaniola, is generally not included in this volume and is thought not to have been published.) Of particular interest are depictions of the people of the island in their everyday dress, in scenes of dancing, playing at fighting with sticks, and bathing and washing clothes—a rare and valuable documentation of daily life in Saint-Domingue, when it was the most lucrative European colony in the world.
